As a teenager, we tend to take on “identities” and sort ourselves into one category or another. These categories and their hierarchies make it difficult for us to approach one another with an open heart. 

Neil has trouble approaching the girl he loves (Kelly) because he feels that she’s way above his league. Kelly is a kind girl, but involves herself with toxic people - this hinders her ability to gauge what she wants for herself. Adolescence is a complicated stage of life - discovering who we are and what we want is difficult because we can’t help but care so much about what others think of us. This scene is a short example of that.

This storyboard is inspired by the directorial style of John Hughes’ films from the ’80s. I absolutely LOVE his films especially the iconic The Breakfast Club, Planes, Trains and Automobiles and especially his screenplay for Pretty in Pink.
